eco products review - Feb 2019

February 20, 2019

It takes some effort to search for sustainable companies and change shopping habits, but once I do it’s always well worth it. Here’s a few of my favorite health and beauty finds, all palm-oil free:

Hand-in-Hand (Philadelphia, PA) hand-crafted bar soaps with a luxurious lather (four fragrances: lavender, sea salt, cactus blossom, citrus grove) are palm-oil free, vegan, fair-trade, and never tested on animals ($6/bar online; free shipping with orders over $55). They also donate one bar of soap and one month of clean water to a child in need for every product purchased. My favorite is Sea Salt for the invigorating, minty aromatherapy scent.

The Soap Works (Toronto, Canada) has six hand-crafted bar soaps that are palm-oil free and never tested on animals: bulk pure glycerine, goat milk with oatmeal, emu oil, lavender blue glycerine, coal tar, and carbolic.

Order Soap Works products online through stores listed on the website. Prices are competitive ($1.44—$2.73 per bar for the three I buy) so even though I’m paying for shipping from Canada, I stock-up generously. My three favorites are goat milk for a moisturizing facial soap, lavender blue for an invigorating shower soap, and therapeutic emu oil for dry skin.

For moisturizers that are palm-oil free, I use two LUSH products everyday, 365 days a year. Cosmetic Lad is a soothing, lightweight facial moisturizer with a whipped consistency that absorbs quickly, is perfect for hydrating delicate skin around-the-eye, and is highly-concentrated so even though the price is a bit higher ($25.95 1.5 oz.) this pot really does last a long time. For a great overall daily body moisturizer (dry hands, elbows, feet) with an invigorating scent, Charity Pot is it ($7.95 1.7 oz). For every purchase of a Charity Pot, LUSH donates to a social justice, environmental, or animal rights cause.

About seven years ago I was really tired (and worried) about scalp irritation and also began hearing more about the danger of PPD and PTD, so I decided to go cold-turkey on all chemical hair coloring. It took time to research and find a truly 100% natural botanical product that both worked well and was easy to use. My hair is so much healthier now, I’m doing the right thing for the environment and even saving money. Palette By Nature’s All Natural Permanent Hair Color is 100% plant-based color, both PPD and PTD-free. It’s basically mistake-free, blends beautifully with your natural color, and is extremely gentle. Once you find the color that works for you, you can stock-up with a bulk purchase (free shipping for U.S. orders over $100). And for a 5% discount, readers from my blog can use this code:  OWLS05
